Size

Lightweight, thin, compact, and portable is what we’d use to describe the D55141 air compressor. While its 2 gallon air tank is smaller than the more common 6 gallon tanks used in pancake shaped compressors, it’s much easier to carry around. The main unit weighs less than 30 pounds so there’s no need to struggle with moving the compressor from room to room. At a little over 10 inches tall, it can be stored where others can’t. A wrap-around roll cage protects the tank and gauges from any falls. Dual quick connect couplers allow for multiple tools to be connected at once but you’re better off not using both at once since this isn’t exactly a workhorse air compressor.

The Air Tools

  • cheap air compressor combo setThe D51257K finish nailer is ideal for trim work. It can hold up to 100 16-gauge straight collated finish nails ranging in size from 1 to 2-1/2 inches long. It operates at 70-120 PSI and has a thumb wheel for convenient depth of nail adjustment. Because it weighs less than 4 pounds and features an overmolded handle, it’s pretty comfortable to use for extended periods.
  • The D51236K brad nailer is designed for trim carpentry. It will take a magazine holding up to 110 18-gauge brad nails with a length of 5/8 to 1-1/4 inches. It too works at 70-120 PSI and includes the same depth of nail adjustment thumbwheel. At 2.5 pounds, this nail gun is feather light. A convenient window on the side allows you to quickly see if you’re running low on nails.

What’s really great about this kit is that even if you already have an air compressor, the low bundle price means you can sell the unit on Craigslist for a good amount (DeWalt tools resell well) and you’re left with a couple good nail guns that you essentially paid peanuts for.

Performance

As part of an inexpensive combo set, the D55141 compressor is mainly intended to be used as an occasional-use product for around the house. That said, it does well at smaller jobs where its 2.0 CFM @ 90psi is plenty of airflow for most things. The compressor has no issues with cold starts and its 2 gallon tank fills up very quickly so you can get started on your task right away. The downside of the tank is that it requires a lot of recharging. The manufacturer rates the motor at 300 hours so you don’t want to plan on running this little unit 8 hours a day. Larger, more powerful units are much more suited for doing continuous work.

Noise Level

DeWalt rates the noise level at 79 dBA but when you compare it to other brands with a similarly rated noise level, this unit sounds quieter for some reason. When going up against the pancake style compressors in this category, the DeWalt is quieter than almost all of them.

Who It’s For

If you’re just starting out with air tools and plan on the occasional light-duty jobs, The DeWalt D55141FNBN combo kit is a good one to consider. The package is highly portable and has enough power to do things such as:  trimming a window, updating kitchen cabinets, adding baseboards, inflating tires, crafts, and airbrushing. Not many units can you fill up the tank in the garage, unplug, and walk around the house cleaning off dust and inflating toys/tires. This set makes for a great gift birthdays, Christmas, Fathers’ Day, or for new homeowners.

Pros

  • Excellent value
  • Super light and portable
  • Included air tools are useful
  • Air tank holds pressure well
  • DeWalt customer service
  • Wrap-around rollcage

Cons

  • Included PVC hose is almost useless (buy one of these)
  • Is limited to small projects
  • Includes nail guns are not the easiest to load
  • Questionable reliability

Final Verdict on the DeWalt D55141FNBN Compressor Combo Kit

While there are more powerful and higher quality air compressor combo kits out there, none are as light and portable as DeWalt D55141FNBN combo kit. It’s a great set for those who need a quick use compressor, that’s easy to move around, and not cost a lot of money. Many users who simply need the nail guns purchase this set and resell the actual compressor unit on Craigslist where the DeWalt brand is highly desirable. If you’re looking for a more powerful and higher quality set and have a slightly bigger budget, you should definitely consider combo sets from Bostitch and Porter Cable. Keep in mind that these units will also be slightly larger and heavier.
