Campbell Hausfeld HU502000AV Review

Share:

An older unit, the Campbell Hausfeld HU502000AV air compressor is still being sold today and for good reason. It’s one of the most inexpensive large capacity air compressors on the market. While its low cost will attract many home users, most will opt for newer units if their budget allows. That said, Campbell Hausfeld is a household name in air compressors, and this model will be a good fit for many, inside their garage.

Size

Weighing in at just under 100 lbs and with a 20-gallon tank size, the Campbell Hausfeld HU502000AV is a hefty unit using old-school construction. The hefty air tank uses steel that is 15% thicker than average allowing CH to include a 10-year warranty against holes or cracks. The large tank is positioned vertically to allow for the smallest size footprint. While most owners will keep this compressor stationary in a corner of their garage, the attached wheels and handle allows for portability. It would have been nice to have pneumatic type wheels but instead we get plastic. Fortunately, switching out the wheels is easy enough for anyone to do.

While the HU502000AV is pretty bland looking with the familiar Campbell Hausheld blue color, the gauges and regulator knob are located in an easily accessible location as is the tank drain valve. Definitely not the same kind of eye candy as other units but who cares… it’s an air compressor!

Performance

The Campbell Hausfeld features a direct drive pump which allows the compressor to produce 3.8 CFM at 90 PSI. Not exactly great for a compressor of this size but the low price definitely makes it acceptable. You’ll still be able to use some of the most common air tools in your garage. The large 20 gallon tank allows for good constant air pressure. You won’t notice much lag even when using a large blow gun. That’s one of the biggest benefits of these larger tanks. If you were to use a blow gun with a small 2 gallon compressor, the pump would constantly be trying to refill the tank to keep up. Not an issue with the HU502000AV.

Noise Level

Like its performance, we’d rate the compressor as average on the loudness factor. At 85 decibels, the noise is comparable to that of a kitchen blender. You will definitely want to use ear plugs with this and any compressor at or above this level if you’re planning on using it more than just a few minutes.

Who It’s For

The Campbell Hausfeld HU502000AV is a good, inexpensive compressor for the garage or workshop for someone who requires a large air tank for longer use. If you use constant air tools such as die grinders, air saws, or spray guns, it’s a much better option than some of the smaller compressors. It’s not the most powerful, but adequate for most work. While it has wheels making it portable, most users will simply keep it in a corner of their shop or garage. Some will be turned off by the noise level of this unit; for others, the low price is a good trade-off.

Pros

  • Replacement parts easy to find
  • Large tank at a low price
  • Brass drain fitting

Cons

  • Does not include any accessories
  • Cheap plastic wheels (switch out with pneumatic type)
  • Paint is below average quality
  • Customer service is not on par with some other brands

Final Verdict on the Campbell Hausfeld HU502000AV Air Compressor

If you require a compressor with a large tank, with decent airflow, and are on a budget, this compressor is a good choice. Even though this is an older model, this compressor is still popular because of its price. If you can afford to spend a little more, the DeWalt D55167 is a good upgrade over the Campbell Hausfeld on most counts. Even better is the Industrial Air IL1682066 whose performance in the category is unmatched but comes with a higher price. All in all, you could do much worse than this compressor. The performance is good enough for most and the price can’t be beat.

Bought one of these 20 gal compressors and after about 6 hours of use it started making a lot of noise and would no longer make compressed air. Took it apart an found out that I need to buy a new piston kit! I would not recommend this product on the experience i’ve have had!
